Janbari Privacy Policy

Effective date: September 27, 2026

Janbari ("we," "us," "our," "the App") is a mobile application that helps Somali-speaking learners study English. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

Janbari is developed by Janbari. If you have questions about this policy or your data, contact us at Janbari2026@gmail.com or via WhatsApp at +252 770 906 001.

Information We Collect

Account information. When you create a Janbari account, we collect your email address and password (handled securely by our authentication provider, Supabase). We also store profile details you provide, such as your name, learning goal, English level, and daily study goal.

Learning progress. We store your lesson and unit completion, points, streaks, and achievements so your progress is saved across sessions.

AI Teacher conversations. Text messages you send to and receive from Janbari's AI Teacher feature are stored on our servers, associated with your account, so your conversation history is available to you.

Voice and microphone data. Janbari uses your device's microphone for three features: Pronunciation Practice, AI Speaking, and Live English Practice (a live voice speaking exercise with another learner).

AI features and your consent. Some Janbari features use outside AI services:

Janbari does not add your name, email address or payment details to what it sends to these services, and Live English Practice calls are never sent to them. Please do not type or say personal details during AI practice.

Before anything is sent to these services for the first time, the app shows a screen called "AI features and your data" explaining the above and asks for your permission. If you choose "Not now", nothing is sent and your lessons keep working; only the AI features wait for your permission. You can withdraw or give permission at any time in the app under Profile → Privacy. We record your choice (allowed or withdrawn), the version of the explanation you saw, the time, the platform and the app version. The Janbari iOS app asks for this permission now; the Android app will ask from its next update.

Live English Practice. Live English Practice connects you with another signed-in learner for a short, real-time, voice-only speaking exercise. It is not anonymous: the other learner sees your first name, your English level and the month you joined (never your surname, email, phone number, date of birth or account ID), and you see the same about them. Sessions are not recorded or stored, and Janbari staff do not listen to them.

Date of birth. Live English Practice is only for learners aged 18 or over. Before your first session we ask for your date of birth and store it so that the age check cannot be bypassed. It is used for that purpose only, is never shown to other learners or used for advertising, and is deleted with your account.

Terms acceptance. We record which version of the Terms of Use you accepted, when, and on which platform.

Safety reports, blocks and moderation. If you report or block another learner we store who made the report, who it is about, the session it relates to, the category you chose and any note you wrote. Our moderation team reviews reports together with session details (time, length, levels and the assigned topic) and the moderation history of the accounts involved. If we restrict an account's access to Live English Practice we store the type of restriction, its dates and the moderator's reason. Moderators see names, not email addresses or payment details, and every moderation action is logged. We also store the optional feedback you give at the end of a session.

Push notification data. If you enable notifications, we store an Expo push token and a randomly generated installation identifier (not tied to your device's hardware) so we can deliver reminders to your device.

Subscription and payment information. We store your subscription tier, status, and request history.

App integrity check (iPhone and iPad). To confirm that requests come from the genuine Janbari app, the iOS app uses Apple's App Attest service. The app creates a key that stays in your device's secure hardware; we store that key's identifier, its public key, Apple's attestation receipt and a usage counter, linked to your account, and a record of which signed-in session was verified. This is used only to provide the free iOS lessons and to prevent misuse. It is deleted with your account.

Information we do not collect. Janbari does not use any analytics or crash-reporting service, and does not collect advertising identifiers.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information above to: provide and personalize your learning experience; save your progress; operate AI Teacher, AI Speaking, and Pronunciation Practice; connect you with another learner in Live English Practice and keep it safe (age check, reports, blocks and moderation); send you optional reminder notifications; process subscription requests; verify the genuine iOS app (App Attest); and respect your AI data-sharing choice.

Live English Practice voice runs on Janbari's own server using the open-source LiveKit software; it is not a third-party service provider.

Third-Party Service Providers

We rely on the following providers to operate Janbari. Each processes data only as needed to provide their service to us:

Data Security

Data is stored with our backend provider (Supabase), protected by row-level access controls so users can only access their own data. Voice/audio data described above is processed only transiently and is not retained beyond what's stated.

Data Retention

We retain your account and learning data for as long as your account is active. AI Teacher conversation history is retained until you delete your account. If you stop using Janbari, your data remains until you request deletion (see below).

Your Rights and Account Deletion

You can permanently delete your account and its data at any time, directly inside the Janbari app (Profile → Legal → Delete Account), or via our Account Deletion page if you no longer have access to the app. Deletion is immediate and permanent — see that page for exactly what is removed.

Age Requirement

Janbari is intended for users aged 13 and older and is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. Live English Practice is restricted to users aged 18 or over.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will update the effective date above when we do.
